The Inria Saclay-Île-de-France Research Centre was established in 2008. It has developed as part of the Saclay site in partnership with Paris-Saclay University and with the Institut Polytechnique de Paris .
The centre has , 27 of which operate jointly with Paris-Saclay University and the Institut Polytechnique de Paris; Its activities occupy over 600 people, scientists and research and innovation support staff, including 44 different nationalities.
Contexte et atouts du poste
The PhD will be joint between the ExSitu research group (Michel Beaudouin-Lafon) at LISN and the RPI-Bio research group (Ignacio Avellino) at ISIR (Sorbonne Université / CNRS).
The candidate will spend approximately half their time in each lab.
Mission confiée
The main research question of this thesis is: What conditions predict and can affect whether professionals develop deep, sustained engagement with an AI system versus stable, superficial use, despite identical system performance and access?
They key questions are:
- What early interaction experiences predict subsequent engagement trajectories?
- How do professional identity and existing work practices shape whether practitioners construct a working relationship with an AI tool?
- What role do the social and organizational context of professional work play in normalizing or inhibiting deep AI engagement over time?
- What changes in how AI tools are designed, introduced and deployed can improve the relationships that practitioners develop with these tools?
Principales activités
The candidatewill conduct a longitudinal mixed-methods study in clinical settings where AI documentation or decision-support systems are already deployed. Site access will be secured through partnerships with healthcare institutions in the Paris area.
Phase 1 will consist of behavioral anlaysis to identify engagement trajectories.
Phase 2 will be a qualitative investigation through semi-structured interviews.
Phase 3 will result in a framework and design principles.
The results will be published in the conferences and journals in the field.
Compétences
Technical skills and level required : Masters level in Computer Science. Specializations in Human-Computer Interaction and/or AI are welcome.
Languages : fluent English
Relational skills : The candidate must be able to work in a research collective and contribute to the life of the two research groups hosting the project. The candidate must also have good relational skills to conduct field studies in the medical environment, including observations, interviews and workshops with end users.
