Détail du poste

YOUR ROLE

The shipping sector is carrying out a major transformation in a context of decarbonization of its industry. In perspective and transition period, CMA CGM has committed to use LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) as a marine fuel for its new fleet of container ships.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a cryogenic liquid obtained by condensation of a mixture of gases composed mainly of methane. It is stored on board ships at a temperature of approximately -158°C and at atmospheric pressure using a technology of tanks integrated into the structure of the ship, known as "membrane" or "type C" tanks. Its emissions after combustion are lower than those of conventional marine fuels (HFO, MDO).

The LNG tank is the place of complex phenomena due to its physical nature as a multi-component fluid that evaporates over time because of the heat ingress through the tank walls and to the effects of sea motion resulting in a sloshing phenomenon which generates additional evaporation, with a consequent pressure rise in the tank.

Understanding the thermodynamic conditions and controlling evaporation management within the tank are therefore a major challenge for CMA CGM for the safety and operational excellence of LNG-powered vessels.

In this context, CMA Ships Technical Department would like to implement specific tools and models to assess the physical phenomena involved in LNG tank, with direct benefit on:
- Improving support to ships in operation with real-time calculation by our model of LNG saturation pressure
- Assisting our Crews in their daily management of LNG tank Boil Off Gas (BOG) and their pilotage of the thermodynamic condition of the tank
- Anticipating excessive gas generation and significant pressure spikes in the tank
- Predicting LNG ageing over time, with positive application on predicting quantity and quality of LNG molecules to be bunkered (methane number, stratification).

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ?

The objective of the internship Project is therefore to improve, test and calibrate these operational supporting in house thermodynamic tools, and manage the project of deploying the tools into their integration in a ship shore interface. Project will be organized as follows:
- Literature review to understand the LNG behavior within tank
- On boarding on LNG vessels of the company to observe in-situ the tank behavior in different operational conditions at sea
- Python tool familiarization
- Data acquisition planning
- Data collection campaign
- Calibration and validation of the tools with real datas (from LNG sampled during bunkering of LNG vessels)
- Analysis of results and redaction of report

WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

- You have a Master's degree in engineering.
- You have a strong interest in modeling and programming: knowledge of Fortran and Python is required.
- Knowledge of C++ would be appreciated.
- Ideally, you have experience in coding or thermodynamics.
- Your analytical mind, rigor, and organizational skills will be assets for success in this position.
- You have a certain appetite for field work (possibility of going on board ships).
- You are fluent in English.
