The Senior Engineering Manager job at Alan
At Alan, our engineering leaders are exceptional technical leaders who combine strategic vision with hands-on leadership to drive both team excellence and technical innovation. As a Senior Engineering Manager, you'll remain deeply technical while building high-performing teams across multiple engineering crews.
Your mission
You'll lead an engineering area of 6-15 engineers, staying close to the code while scaling your impact through exceptional teams. In this role, you will :
- Set technical direction by balancing debt with features, establishing quality standards through code reviews, and driving operational excellence in monitoring and security
- Build talent density through strategic hiring, honest performance management, and creating engaging technical challenges that excite engineers
- Enable effective collaboration across crews by fostering psychological safety, facilitating knowledge sharing, and addressing team dynamics proactively
- Drive strategic alignment with product partners, improve development efficiency using modern tools (AI, Cursor, Dust), and ensure realistic commitments that balance technical needs with business goals
- Stay hands-on with architecture decisions, technical problem-solving, and maintaining your engineering skills while developing as a leader
What we're looking for
- 3-5 years of engineering management experience with a track record of building high-performing teams
- Strong technical background with the ability to make sound architectural decisions and guide technical excellence
- Proven ability to balance technical debt with feature delivery while maintaining engineering standards
- Experience with modern development practices including AI-assisted development, automated testing, and productivity tools
- Passion for both building great products and developing great engineers
- Interest in AI and modern productivity tools to enhance team efficiency
The customer support organisation
You'll lead the teams building sophisticated tools and systems that power. Your mission will BE to help the engineering team to create that help our support team deliver exceptional support to our members, combining technical excellence with a deep understanding of operational needs.
