Transdermal and biomedical patches normally distribute protection, mechanical integrity and adhesion among several materials. PHA-SEAL instead asks whether one PHA/block-copolymer formulation can self-organise through its thickness to provide three functions in a single continuous film: an outer lidding/barrier interface, a cohesive and flexible bulk, and an adhesive and antimicrobial skin-facing interface. Preliminary 2026 tests demonstrated the feasibility of PHA/block-copolymer films and the influence of formulation on flexibility and crystallisation. O1 - Establish PHA references and synthesise PHA-compatible and PHA-containing block copolymers.
O2 - Control nanoscale self-assembly and preferential block enrichment across one continuous film.
O3 - Relate the same film's organisation to outer-interface barrier performance, bulk cohesion/flexibility and skin-interface adhesion/antimicrobial activity.
O4 - Validate permeability, ageing, biodegradation and relevant in vitro adhesion, cytocompatibility and antimicrobial performance.
Synthesis of PHA-compatible biodegradable block copolymers and true PHA-containing block copolymers by controlled polymerisation and coupling; NMR, SEC and spectroscopy; solution and melt processing of single films; DSC, TGA, DMA/rheology; scattering, microscopy, spectroscopy and surface analysis to resolve self-assembly and through-thickness organisation; O/HO permeability; contact angle and surface energy; tack, 90°/180° peel, shear, cycling and ageing under dry and humid conditions; biodegradation; and relevant in vitro adhesion, cytocompatibility and antimicrobial testing with appropriate facilities/partners.
