Summary
In recent years, a variety of volumetric representations have been developed to support New View Generation (NVG)-the process of synthesizing novel perspectives of a scene from a limited set of captured views. Among these, 3D Gaussian Splatting (3DGS) has emerged as a leading technique, offering high-quality rendering of volumetric data with impressive realism and efficiency, marking a significant shift in how 3D scenes are represented.
3DGS models scenes as dense collections of 3D ellipsoidal primitives, each defined by a Gaussian function that supports anisotropic scaling, rotation, and stretching. These primitives also encode view-dependent color and opacity, allowing for nuanced and realistic rendering from multiple angles. However, this rendering quality comes at the cost of a large data footprint, which has sparked growing interest in efficient compression techniques, particularly within MPEG, where standardization efforts are actively progressing.
In this context, the goal of the internship is threefold: (1) Understanding and gaining mastery over a specific algorithmic component within the 3D Gaussian splat compression workflow, with a focus on its software implementation, (2) Developing and integrating software modules within the reference framework, ensuring clean, efficient, and well-documented code, and (3) conducting thorough testing and validation of the implemented solutions, including simulation-based evaluations aligned with the MPEG GSC protocol.
You will be working in the 3D Native Codec team, in the New Media Codecs Group of the Video Lab.
Responsibilities
In collaboration with the InterDigital research team, the candidate will be expected to:
Develop a solid understanding of a targeted algorithmic component.
Apply software engineering best practices to design, develop, and integrate modular, efficient, and maintainable code within an existing reference framework.
Perform rigorous testing and validation, including simulation-based evaluations, to ensure functional correctness and performance in line with established protocols.
Communicate technical outcomes effectively, contributing to documentation, internal reports, and potentially to publications or intellectual property filings.

Qualifications
Master's student in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
Strong proficiency in C/C++ and Python is required. Familiarity with one or more of the following areas is a plus: 3D geometry, compression, computer vision, or computer graphics.
Fluent in English, with excellent written and verbal communication skills. Demonstrates strong collaboration abilities and a team-oriented mindset.
